Weekly Recommendation: Scream Queens

Srceams.jpg

This weeks recommendation comes in the form of a little known television show that takes the teen horror genre and turns it completely upside down and acknowledges the entire infeasible actions these characters normally take into a funny mystery that features the death of a character each episode until the killer is finally revealed.

recommendationThe series focuses on the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority at Wallace University, led by Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts), that is threatened by Dean Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis); leading to events that reignite a 20-year old murder mystery, with the reemergence of the serial killer dressed as the Red Devil mascot, who begins targeting the sorority members. This may sound like standard horror story script but the fact that the characters are complete parodies of every teenager ever seen in a horror movie and the dialog openly mocks the decisions the charaters are making and the charscters themselves even mock the decisions they make and question why they would do this as its clearly the wrong/stupid decision.

I honestly expected Scream Queens to be a cheesy teenage drama type show, similar to the recent MTV revamp of Scream that I couldn’t get myself into, however what we got was something much much more. The villain in the show seems to be a one dimesional very bright looking joke of killer, but the method he dispatches the victims shows that this isnt the case, almost right off the bat he manages to run over a girl using a ride on mower to decapitate her and from there the kills only get more horrific and comedic. And that seems to be the purpose of the villain to add the violence to the show while despatching the girls in comical and often avoidable ways if they made better choices.Add to that the hugely limited motion and vision that his helmet adds to his overall character and its wonder he kills or maims anyone, but he does and usually in very cool ways.

The characters are mostly hateable in this show, but theyre supposed to be which means you do still want to see what happens and the drama around who is the killer and why is enough to keep you hooked and constantly guessing. There are even some big swerves along the way as you start to think you know who the killers are and why that totally throw everything back into the realm of possibilities. This show is comedy gold, and anyone who is a big horror movie fan should really check this out simply for the fact it does a great job of making every recent main stream horror movie look as foolish as they actually are.

I couldn’t leave this review without mentioning the brilliance that is Chad Radwell within this show- he’s the stereotypical hunk on campus that is completely rich and all the girls want. However in this show hes also a total weirdo with a fetish for corpses, a total narcosist and overall full of some of the best dialog this show has to offer. He tottally encapsulates the entire horror genre and everything that wrong with it, but in the most engrossing and comical way you could possibly imagine. This show wouldnt be the same without him, and trust me when I say you will totally love this guy.
