Best developments from Free Comic Book Day 2016

This weekend saw 2016s Free Comic Book Day (My Daughter loved this year), and amidst the titles there was some very good storytelling, and there was some shocks set out in advance of future stories. So without any further messing around here are the biggest developments from the weekend: Continue reading

Weekly Recommendation; Avengers Vs X-Men: Axis

This weeks recommendation is a short event series from Marvel comics, that is still currently running with a single issue left to make the stands and as such is a first for me as I’ve never recommended a mini-series that is still running. However this series so far has been one hell of a read and looks like it could really leave lasting ramifications on the Marvel universe. Continue reading

Comic Book releases 2/10/13

Wednesday will soon be upon once more- and that means a whole new bunch of comic books to buy. So without further ado, here’s my pick of the week:

All new X-men 17:

allnxmen17Battle of the Atom rages on in this issue, taking us past the half way mark of the series with part6. So far the Event has been interesting, with all of the X-men(minus Cables team) having a part to play. So far we’ve seen young Jean and Scott on the run, in an attempt to make their own choices about staying in the future while being pursued by various X-teams including one from the future and then seeking solitude with Scott/Cyclops.  Its been a good build to what should be a great conclusion, and the time for the conclusion to begin is now. The official synopsis for the book is as follows:

• Magik and Young Beast have a special mission!
• The X-Men and Future X-Men have Jean Grey and Cyclops and are going to send them back in time with the rest of the Original X-Men.
• But who is opposing them and why?

With all the time stream manipulation that’s been going in the X-men books recently, i wouldn’t be at all surprised to see another set of future X-men here- but what intrigues me the most, is who will be in that team? And is Xavier really the grandson of Charles? Guess time will tell.

The Witching Hour 1

witchinghourThis is a brand new title, being published by Vertigo. And it’s a simple premise really, a collection of short tales all based around the supernatural. Now I’m the first to admit that I normally pass up short tales and comic books that contain one time shorts, but this one has me intrigued.

Why am i intrigued? Well plain and simply there is a tale written by Lauren Buekes, who is a phenomenal novelist and storyteller (You owe it to yourself to check out Zoo City) and im interested to see what she can do given the medium of comic book storytelling, especially as he Fable tales were so good. And to be honest, its been a long time since DC cancelled the run on this series- and with how well ‘Darkhorse presents’ sells and introduces new characters and tales there has to be room for this kind of book on the shelves.

Uncanny Avengers 12

STK618751Uncanny Avengers has been one of the best books to Launch from Phase1 of Marvel Now, and continues to deliver huge and impactful stories. The current story arc with the Apocalypse twins really does show just how well thought out Rick Remender’s story arcs are- as he began this in Uncanny X-force and the consequences have carried over to this book along with the dark tone, and many thought that wouldn’t be the case on one of Marvel’s main titles.

Its been a while since we saw the destruction that the Red Skull was able to cause with the mutant abilities of Charles Xavier, but this issue promises to show us what he’s been up to, along with providing us an origin story of sorts for the Apocalypse twins. If this continues to be as well written- and i see no reason why it shouldn’t- then this is my must buy book the week. Any origin for the Apocalypse twins has me sold, and the work Acuna does to bring these two too life is amazing. As much as i loved Cassaday’s work on the opening arc, Acuna has really made the characters his own and his style suits the darker story telling and really helps the mood of the book.

And lets not forget this issue gives the real motives of Kang, who has played a huge part in the Apocalypse twins tale so far- what could he really want?

Guess im going to have to buy the book and find out like everyone else.
