Tears of a Geek

As lovers of Comic Books, movies, animation and all things geeky- there tends to be a thought that were far removed from the societal norms of emotions others feel, but we know that’s not true. We feel the same way about the X-Men that others do about the Kardashians (I know which I prefer out of those mutants!) and at times the stories and characters we love make us cry- yes I’ve cried at comic books and here are the times that hurt me the most. Comic Con 2013- Marvel/DC Movie and TV Universe

San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone this year, with a sleuth of news and announcements that have had me cheering and going ‘What?’

So this is where I’m attempting to give an overview of the big news and the odd news coming out of this weekends huge event.

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe

The big news coming out of the Marvel camp is that the Avengers sequel officially gets a title “Avengers: Age of Ultron” Now while this is the name of the recent summer comicbook event, theres no plot synopsis for the movie yet, so how closely these two will tie in who knows.  And as the great news of seeing Ultron on the screen sank in- it was announced that this didn’t mean marvel were paving the way for Hank Pym to appear in the movie- a minor down point if you ask me.

ImageGuardians of the galaxy- also got its first little bit of footage shown at this years event, which by all accounts was supposedly awesome.  The make-up work is supposed to completely nail the look of both Gamora and Drax (Drax is a favorite of mine) and Rocket Racoon is also featured and looks great.  Now the big reveal at this panel is below:

Halfway through the panel, to the surprise of all, Gillan tore off a wig to reveal that she has shaved all her hair off for the role. And Hounsou slipped-up at one point and said that his character works with Thanos in the film. Oh, so Thanos is in Guardians then? Oh man, Feige’s not gonna like that reveal!

Now not only has Gillan shaved her head (Good on her) for the role- but she spilled the beans on Thanos- consider me more excited than ever.

X-men Days of future past

ImageNot only did we get a glimpse at what the Sentinels will look like in the upcoming movie, and a full run down of all the characters involved in the giant epic, but we also got one of the key story elements- It will b wolverine traveling back through time not Kitty Pryde. Now this is a big change but i guess from the movie goers standpoint wolverine is the better known character.  But if the sentinel is anything to go by, who cares.  I just wanna see a fast ball special through that head to the left!

Agents of Shield also got its first showing at comic con- as a complete surprise. And im happy to say that all signs point to good things.  Ive heard nothing but good so far- and considering it Whedon im glad to hear this.

Captain America: the winter soldier also got to show of some of its hardware- with Caps Harley Davidson being on display for fans to see over the weekend. Along with some footage showing Cap fighting in an elevator with multiple assailants- and a nice reference to Crossbones.  This could be a good thing- who doesnt want to see Crossbones on the big screen.

Thor: The Dark World also got some additional and new footage shown too, along with the first few minutes of Hulk and the agents of smash (animated series) So it appears this has been a really good show for the Marvel movie universe.

ImageAnd for anyone living under a rock here’s a nice new Electro introduction from the Amazing Spiderman 2

DC Movie/Tv

ImageIncase you can’t see to the left, the big news out the DC camp is that Batman and Superman will appear in their first film together ever with a tentative summer 2015 release.

This is due to be directed by Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) and star Henry Cavill. Snyder will also co-write again with David S.Goyer, and here is what Snyder had to say on the issue

“I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter.  Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”

Now this has me both excited- as id love to see this movie- but nervous at the same time as i feel it may be too close to Nolan’s epic Batman films to re-cast and restart but i guess time will tell.

Rumour circulating also states that a Flash movie is inbound for a 2016 release while the long delayed and cursed JLA movie may get a 2017 release.

On the TV side of things, the surprisingly good Arrow got a trailer for series two (below) and has also confirmed Black Canary will appear as Black Canary, the Suicide Squad will appear, Deadshot Returns (thank god) and Bronze Tiger will also appear this series.

Justice League the flash Point has also had a nice 1minute of footage shown at this years event- which is based upon DC’s Flashpoint comicbook event.  And by all accounts the animation looks good- but the sheer brutality may be a little hard for some to take. While this is a mature themed story, do we need to see dead kids limp bodies falling to the floor in animation- i guess that’s up to each and every viewer- but with the decidedly anime look and take on the comic series im definitely hooked by this more than i was the comicbook event.  And that almost makes me sad, as i am a huge fan of the comicbook art and usually prefer that medium to the TV versions but i guess this time im excited to see how it turns out, and if they fix the lack of real villain time the comic suffered from.

And on a side note- as i couldn’t post all this news without it, we got a Walking Dead season4 Trailer and its totally AWESOME!

Breaking Bad also had a panel that began to outline the end for the show- of which im a huge fan- and have no idea why we don’t get this on UK TV.  I can’t go into details on the Q&A session as i didnt read it, i’m really trying to avoid all the spoilers i can, but it is linked on the page on the bottom if you want to know.  But i have to admit im sad that this show is due to end, yet im sure it will be a truly great Tv moment.

There was plenty of other Movie/TV news at the event this year- but these were my highlights along with the news that Supernatural is getting a spin off series (no really it is) so for the rest of the news check out IGN
