WWE Payback is the first PPV since WrestleMania and the superstar shake-up, so it has a weird feel to it with a WWE title match (Smackdown title) and a winner moves to Smackdown stipulation on the US Title. Either way there are some exciting matches on this card, so lets breakdown who I think will walk out with their arm raised.
The entire card for the PPV is as follows:
|Preshow||Enzo Amore and Big Cass vs Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows||Tag Team match|
|1||Neville (c) vs Austin Aries||Singles match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship|
|2||The Hardy Boyz (c) vs Cesaro and Sheamus||Tag team match for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship|
|3||Seth Rollins vs Samoa Joe||Singles match|
|4||Kevin Owens (c) vs Chris Jericho||Singles match for the WWE United States Championship|
|5||Bayley (c) vs Alexa Bliss||Singles match for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship|
|6||Roman Reigns vs Braun Strowman||Singles match|
|7||Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt||House of Horrors match|
Enzo and Cass Vs. The Club
I Honestly felt like ‘The Club’ were going to be treated with some real booking, and shown to be the bad-ass team we know they can be, when they won the titles however the return of the Hardys has derailed this a little bit too much for my liking. And returning to a feud with Enzo and Cass hasn’t really helped as it feels like we have seen these two teams meet a thousand times before, and the fact that neither team has huge momentum is most likely the reason they are sitting on the pre-show. The Club really deserve better treatment recently and with the ‘Revival’ sitting on the shelves now may be the time to make these guys the top heel team on the show again and a big win here via mini shenanigans feels like the right way to do this.
Winner: The Club!
Neville Vs. Austin Aries
These two proved how good a crusierweight contest could be when given time at WrestleMania, and deserved to be on the main card not just the pre-show- and now their time has arrived. These two could very steal the show here, as long as they are given atleast 15minutes to work with as the build to this has been nothing short of superb between both men. While I am truly loving ‘King of the Crusierweights’ as a gimmick, it feels like if Aries doesn’t get his hands on the title here this time that his push will fade to nothing and he’ll simply become another player in the 205live show- and that would be a waste.
Winner: A Double shows why ‘He’s the Greatest man Alive’
The Hardys Vs. Cesaro & Sheamus (WWE Tag Team Titles)
The Hardys have managed to get themselves to the top of the Tag Team division in no time at all, and so far have looked good there while battling Cesaro and Sheamus. However I honestly haven’t felt like they are better than the rest of the division currently, and this match should really help to set them up as looking really strong and having a decent lengthy reign with the gold. While both Cesaro and Sheamus are great individually, they don’t feel like they have truly gelled as a team but a win over them clean for the Hardys would help to show them as a real tag team force and that feels like the purpose of this match to me; hence both teams showing huge respect to one another in the lead up to this match.
Winner: The Hardys
Seth Rollins Vs. Samoa Joe
These two should provide 20minutes of amazing wrestling right here, as both men are more than capable of going in the ring and we know that they have chemistry together. The feud has been a slow build with Rollins getting HHH in between, but Joe was still lurking in the background the entire time and has been kept strong moving into this match. While both men could do with the momentum of the win, Seth is coming off the back of beating HHH and Raw badly needs a huge heel for the top of the card, so I fully expect the win to go to Joe to keeps his momentum going and keep him looking really strong.
Winner: Samoa Joe
Kevin Owens Vs. Chris Jericho (US Title)
This to me seems unnecessary as after Mania i felt the feud had finished and Jericho would be off to tour with Fozzy. However it seems that this is holding feud before he does go- and with the whole winner moves to Smackdown- despite Owens already being moved to Smackdown, it feels like they’re trying to make us feel the outcome isn’t obvious. We all know Owens who carried Raw for 12months will move to Smackdown and run the show there. Presumably because the WWE title will move to Raw for monthly defences while Brock sits at home for months on end! Either way this should be good in ring match with some great character work that is sure to shine.
Winner: And bloody rightly so Kevin Owens
Bayley Vs. Alexa Bliss (Womens Title)
This too me seems like the best possible feud right now on Raw, post the shake-up rosters as Bliss is a great heel to challenge Bayley and play with her goody too shoes gimmick. They’re is however an issue with this, and its simply that Bayley’s character hasn’t translated brilliantly from NXT and feels to light for the main roster and too watered down to a child who dreams and that only makes Bliss more appealing in this feud. Both women can deliver in the ring, and I’m expecting this match to be a very good bout, however with the amount of flip flopping the creative team have done with the title Bayley needs to hold onto the gold here for it to gain some credibility.
Roman Reigns Vs. Braun Strowman
Braun is very much the best weekly thing about Raw television right now- his path of domination has been nothing short of amazing to watch and he has really improved in the ring over the last 12months- he should be kept strong here to eventually go on and challenge Brock for the title. However if the WWE is to be relied upon for anything its for sticking to their plans- and that means we will get Reigns go over Braun here (probably clean) and move on to challenge Brock for the gold. Not only will this add more fuel to the Roman haters but it will totally derail Brauns momentum as if he loses to Roman every time they meet- can he really be a monster? While I think Roman should be challenging Brock, after his retirement of Undertaker I’m hopeful that they somehow get Brock in the ring with both of these guys at a triple threat to help keep both parties looking strong. However if one party has lose momentum you can guarantee the WWE wont let it be Roman!
Winner: Roman Reigns of course!
Randy Orton Vs. Bray Wyatt (House of Horrors Match)
I had assumed that this match was for the title, however it appears that all mention of that has vanished- so maybe it will turn out to not be for the title at all! Either way this match has been created by Bray seems right up his alley, and he has moved to Raw so there is absolutely no reason to not give him the big win here (The one he should have had at Mania) I have no idea what to expect from this match, but I’m hopeful that the result seems to go the right way.
Winner: Bray Wyatt
