Wednesday is nearly here again and that means that new comic books are merely hours away- and you can feel the excitement! So lets get right to this and let you know what I feel are the big releases of the week you should be reading…..
Royal City #1
Official Synopsis: NEW ONGOING SERIES written and illustrated by JEFF LEMIRE (DESCENDER, A.D., Sweet Tooth). ROYAL CITY charts the lives, loves, and losses of a troubled family and a vanishing town across three decades. Patrick Pike, a fading literary star who reluctantly returns to the once-thriving factory town where he grew up, is quickly drawn back into the dramas of his two adult siblings, his overbearing mother, and his brow-beaten father, all of whom are still haunted by different versions of his youngest brother, Tommy, who drowned decades ago. ROYAL CITY is a return to the literary and thematic territory of LEMIRE’s breakthrough graphic novel Essex County and is his most ambitious, and most personal, project to date.
Why it’s a Pick: Jeff Lemire rights great books- no discussion needed- and his artwork style is always unique and impressive so there’s no reason to expect this book to be like anything else on the shelves and that should be enough to convince you! However given that it may not be enough simply stating that, I’m expecting the character work to be totally on point and the story to be utterly immersive, so get this now!
Rat Queens #1
Official Synopsis: “CAT KINGS AND OTHER GARYS,” Part One.
The Rat Queens are back! Betty, Violet, Dee, Braga, and Hannah return! Palisade is still a rat-infested troll’s ass, and everyone still hates Gary. It’s been a while since the Queens have done a good slaughter, so join them as they get back to the basics of killing monsters and drinking away the profits!
A fresh, soft reboot to the head for the Rat Queens with artist OWEN GIENI!
Why it’s a Pick: Rat Queens has always been a ton of fun to read, and has always been a great looking book. With the soft reboot it seems like a great time to recommend this to new readers, so if you love your books action packed, comical and down right full of fantasy themes then this is the one for you.
Official Synopsis: “I AM BANE” part three! Bane broke the bat before, but it wasn’t enough—now he’s going to break everyone else! Bane is coming, and no one is safe!
Why it’s a Pick: Last issues image of Bane on the rooftop across from Batman gave me goosebumps as it was such a good homage to ‘Breaking the Bat’ and if this story continues in this vein, given the fact he has 4of the Bats best friends on the rooftop with him it could get very messy very quickly. This has been a real rejuvenation for Bane as a character and seeing what Tom King does with him next has me genuinely excited.
Book of the Week
The ending to last issue was too big a hook for me to read anything else first this week- so book of the week has to go to Batman simply for the intrigue factor!
