Comic Book Picks 25th Jan’17

cropped-comic-picks-header.jpg

Its almost that time of the week, when the latest batch of comic books hit the shelves and get me through the oddest day of the working week- I mean its not the horrible start but its not close enough to the end either. This week sees a host of titles hitting the shelves, and some of these are real top ‘A’ list titles, but whats worth rushing out to read? Well here are my top picks for the week.

Saga #42

SAGA42.jpg

Official Synopsis: END OF STORY ARC
“THE WAR FOR PHANG,” The Epic Conclusion!
Hell is war, as Hazel and her family learn the hardest way.

Why it’s a Pick: Saga has been one of the best books on the shelves since it original released and nothing has slowed it down so far, not even the slightly large hiatus it took between arcs. The current story arc has been exciting and has building tension brilliantly, so seeing how this all plays out with hazel back with her family and there planned assault should be amazing- and you can always rely on Fiona Staples to make it look magnificent. This should be an exciting end that I’m convinced Vaughan will leave with a cliff hanger- and you don’t want to miss it.

Hellboy Winter Special 2017

HLBOYWS17.jpg

Official Synopsis: Three weird tales show the world of Hellboy through the years, with Edward Grey appearing alongside Sarah Jewell, hero of the recent Rise of the Black Flame series in 1890s London. In 1980s New England, Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and Liz Sherman set out on a simple search for some missing kids and encounter a tormented spirit seeking to share its pain. And Paul Grist joins the team for a 1950s Hellboy story providing a glimpse of the next new title to debut in the Mignolaverse.

Why it’s a Pick: It’s Hellboy! That really should say enough, but after the end of the solo series (and Yes I cried a little) anything Hellboy related should be jumped on, that includes the really well done Hellboy 1950’s series were getting and this Winter Special should be no different. Hellboy is the best comic book universe created (See Here) so there is absolutely no reason at all for you not to be getting this book and delving deeper into the universe for your own enjoyment.

Harrow County #20

HAROCT20.jpg

Official Synopsis: Hunters have come to Harrow County, seeking to take down its most powerful haints. They have no idea what they’re up against. Emmy tries to save them from their foolish mission, but she will have to sacrifice her last hope of a normal life in order to protect these strangers.

Why it’s a Pick:  Harrow County is always a must read for me, it mixes the supernatural with horror brilliantly and at the same time manages to give us a compelling story revolving around a brilliantly developed central character that still feels like the victim in the whole story so far despite taking control of her powers and her life. This book looks just like it should, a little rough around the edges but punchy where it counts- just like the story and that only helps add to its allure. Add to this the fact that the biggest baddest Haint we have seen so far feels threatened and hunted now, and the action we saw last issue should be nothing compared to the carnage of more hunters- and this is a total exhilarating prospect.

Book of the Week

hlboyws17

The Hellboy special is too much Hellboy to not steal the top spot, there literally isn’t enough Hellboy being released to satisfy the worlds need so when it is it should hit the top of everyone’s reading pile. Add tot hat the oversized edition, and the back-up story that starts of the next mini-series as there isn’t any reason to not be wanting this book right now.
