Today is new comic book day, and that means there’s a huge amount of new comics arriving to the shelves- but with that being the case whats worth you rushing out to buy? Here are my picks for this weeks top releases.
Black Hammer #3
Official Synopsis: Long before Spiral City’s greatest heroes were written out of their universe, the Martian champion Barbalien was already stranded far from home. Disguised as churchgoing Mark Markz in the timeless farming community where the heroes find themselves trapped, Barbalien faces a terrifying personal decision, even as he relives his painful past!
Why its a Pick: Black Hammer has been a breath of fresh air so far, the characters are exciting and intriguing, the team dynamics seem crazy and the mixture of the team is just oddly brilliant. The tale so far has been massively engrossing and looks like it could really promise some exciting developments- such as why are they hidden away and who is keeping them there? This is definitely one to get on board with now and enjoy.
Civil War #5 (of8)
Official Synopsis: The devastating fallout from the first half of this event is enormous and being felt in every corner of the Marvel Universe. The truth about Ulysses’ future-seeing power is revealed and it is a game changer. Sides are irrevocably drawn and the gauntlet is thrown for the biggest battle in Marvel Universe history. And that’s just the stuff we can tell you. All this, and the story goes galactic!
Why its a Pick: The start of this series has been a slow build if your after action, but the story has been brilliant so far. Okay the superhero split dynamic has been done before, but this seems like a hue social issue around profiling and law enforcement and right now feels very topical- and then you have to add in the Banner twist and this really turns the stakes up. Either way as this book rolls over to the second half it should start to build towards the giant universal showdown.
Hellboy and the BPRD 1954: The Black Sun #1
Official Synopsis: When an unknown creature attacks a research group on an Arctic expedition, Hellboy and the BPRD are sent to investigate. No longer the newbie, Hellboy thinks he can solve the mystery immediately, but what they find in the snow reveals something much bigger behind the beast.
Why its a Pick: As I said in my post earlier this week (See it HERE) the Mignola-verse is the best universe in all of comic and Hellboy is the centre piece. Anything written by Mignola and starring Hellboy is always a brilliant read, and with no more Hellboy stories post ‘Hellboy In Hell’ were at least getting stories that take place in the early days, and with how good the last story arc was this one should be a great read.
Book of the Week
As much as Civil WarII and Hellboy have me excited, Black Hammer will be the first thing I read this week. This may be due to the shiny newness of the book, but in honesty it has more to do with the simply brilliance of the story so far and the promise of more to come that has me eager to get my hands on this.
