WWE SummerSlam is a little over 24hours away, and with it being the companies biggest show of the summer it should be a great spectacle. But lets take a look at the card and who I think will be walking out on the night victorious, post the brand split.
The card for the show itself doesn’t look to bad, it’s not quite the card that I was hoping for but has some matches with potential on there. so lets look at the card and then break it all down.:
Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton
Finn Bálor vs. Seth Rollins to crown the first WWE Universal Champion
WWE World Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler
John Cena vs. AJ Styles
U.S. Champion Rusev vs. Roman Reigns
WWE Women’s Champion Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte
WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day vs. Gallows & Anderson
Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens
Intercontinental Champion The Miz vs. Apollo Crews
Carmella, Becky Lynch & Naomi vs. Natalya & Alexa Bliss
Cesaro vs. Sheamus (Kickoff Match)
Sami Zayn & Neville vs. The Dudley Boyz (Kickoff Match)
American Alpha, The Hype Bros & The Usos vs. Breezango, The Ascension & The Vaudevillains (Kickoff Match)
Brock Lesnar Vs. Randy Orton
This has been built well, we’ve seen enough of the beast to get us excited for his return to the ring for the first time since March- and the WWE have done a good job of making Orton seem like a credible threat here. I’m tempted to go with Orton here, as a big win for him could push him right back up to the top of the Smackdown card to pose a worthy challenge for the winner of tonight’s title match. However the Beast is the ‘Beast’ and he doesn’t take challengers lightly at all so should be coming into this ready to eat, suplex, conquer and repeat. For the reason alone, and the fact we’ve already seen an RKO on Lesnar in the build I think the win here goes to the beast.
Winner: Brock Lesnar
Finn Balor Vs. Seth Rollins (Universal Championship)
This is possibly going to be the best match of the night as these two are very capable of putting on some brilliant in ring work. I wasn’t a fan of the weeks final build, seeing Balor as the Demon before the PPV- however that hasn’t diminished my excitement for this contest. The two competitors here are two of the best in the current company and should deliver a solid 25+ minute classic here as long as they’re allowed to go all out. AS for who will be victorious, the answer is the fans- but in the more common sense I think the real question is can Balor afford the loss? He’s been booked strong since his arrival and with his last big PPV match being a loss (and the one before to Joe) can he afford to fall short once again? However Rollins is the man in the other corner, and I’d always go for him over anyone else to hold the gold and carry the company. However i feel Balor has more to gain here from the win, and having Rollins chase could make great television.
Winner: Balor becomes the first Universal Champion!
Dean Ambrose Vs. Dolph Ziggler (WWE Championship)
Until this week I felt the build for this match had been bad, we hadn’t seen anything from Ziggler that made me feel he could put forward a good challenge or that his character was really moving forward in any way- however watching him superkick Ambrose after that promo was what we needed. I still don’t think Ziggler is a credible threat at this point for the current champion- but then who on Smackdown right now is built that way? Either way I expect Ziggler to put on a great match and Ambrose to do his regular spots and decent in ring work on the way to a dirty deeds victory.
Winner: Dean Ambrose
John Cena Vs. AJ Styles
This should have been built as a real top of the card match, but instead we’ve had more of John Cena running down his opponent and never giving anyone credit for there work or ability while AJ feels like he needs a big win to move away from this feud with any of the momentum a man of his talent and ability needs. This has all the tools to deliver in the ring as AJ is simply phenomenal (pun intended) and should be able to put a great match with the competent Cena. I don’t however sense this being the end of their feud and fully expect Cena to get the win here only for AJ to win the final of their 3bouts that will inevitably take place at Backlash.
Winner: Begrudgingly Cena
Rusev Vs. Regins (US Title)
This is a difficult one to call, as Rusev is on a roll and doing some of the best work he has ever done and deserves to be in the upper card easily- while Reigns is still not anywhere near over and mocking Rusev’s manhood on his wedding night isn’t going to help with the fans either. The real question is how much hot water is Reigns still in after the wellness violation? As if hes not in hot water I see him gaining the US title here and holding this for a while on his way to rebuilding himself up, but if I was booking this card it would be a Rusev win all the way as he continues his dominance before a fued and loss to one of the new era stars.
Sasha Banks Vs. Charlotte (Women’s Championship)
This should be a great match, both of these women are more than capable of delivering in the ring and of working a match with some great story- I’m excited for this one. The build has even been good with the chemistry between the two being obvious and working wonderfully on screen, even the work done by Dana has been great in building this feud. This one should get a good 20minutes and really deliver, but at the end of the day I feel very much like the reign of the Boss has simply only just begun.
Winner: Sasha Banks
New Day Vs. Anderson & Gallows
Anderson & Gallows feel like they have been watered down as a team since the arrived in the WWE, they’ve not been booked as the dominant force they should be and the comedy skits arent working at all right now. Having said that the New Day are so over that dropping the titles wouldn’t hurt there act in any way shape or form and would really help to push and build the Club. With Big E out currently as well it feels like the time has finally come for the New Day to drop their titles and the Club to reach the top of the tag team card.
Winner: The Club
Enzo & Cass Vs. Kevin Owens & Jericho
This feels thrown together, despite the greatness of all involved it feels very much like they had nothing for these guys to do so put them together. Owens and Jericho have been fun in the last two weeks, but why Jericho keeps getting teamed with great solo talent to form weirdly named part time teams is beyond me. I’m expecting this to be the moment the Enzo shows the world he can wrestle and score a win, as he will be the one to score the decisive victory over Jericho at the end of a hard fought bout.
Winner: Enzo & Cass
Miz Vs. Apollo Crews (IC title)
These two have barely been toether on screen since this match was made, which seems odd but at the same time leaves me wondering what they can deliver in the ring together. At the minute Miz is at his absolute character best, and Apollo is a natural talent so if they play these aspects up we could be in for a much better than mid card level match. Having said that with Miz sopending less and less time in the company I’m expecting the big upset win for Crews here as he claims his first WWE title.
Winner: Apollo Crews
Carmella, Naomi & Becky Lynch Vs. Natalya & Alexa Bliss
Well the 6women tag team match has now become 5women, thanks to the wellness violation of Eva Marie (can’t say I’ll miss her presence really) unless WWE adds a new face to this match last minute- and we all know Nikki Bella is due back so this could be a surprise. Either way I see the faces getting the win here, as Becky is due a win over Natalya and this seems like the ideal time and situation to give it to her.
Winner: Carmella, Becky & Naomi
