Comic Book Picks 17th August’16

Wednesday is nearly here again, and after a short blogging break (it is the summer!) I’m back to let you know what I’ll be spending my hard earned cash on this week and what I think you guys should be checking out too. So here are this weeks top comic books, in my opinion.

Black Hammer #2

Official Synopsis: The Golden Age heroes of Spiral City have been “erased” from existence! Banished years ago to a timeless farming community, the team are torn between accepting their fate and finding a way home! Chapter 2 focuses on child hero Golden Gail, whose unaging body most deeply feels the tragedy of their new lives.

Why it’s a Pick: Jeff Lemire crafted a brilliant first issue with this title that was as brilliant to read as it was to look at- and gave us some brilliant new character to start to feel familiar with and care for. This issue seems like it will continue to give us some more backstory to the team while teasing what the future may hold for them, and if its half as good as the first issue I’m already sold!

I Hate Fairyland #8

Official Synopsis: “PUT YOUR QUARTER UP”
Gert must rumble her way through a Fairyland fighting tournament to get what she’s looking for.

Why it’s a Pick: This title goes from strength to strength and Skottie Young has created a twisted tale of perfection with Gert here and her adventures. Each issue is brilliantly paced and contains far too much violence for its own good- but somehow retains that fairyland tale feel thanks to the artwork and colouring. This title begs to be read!

Batman #5

Official Synopsis: “I Am Gotham” part five. In the final chapter of this epic, is Batman truly the hero Gotham City deserves—or does it deserve better? In this ultimate showdown, where the line between allies and enemies blurs, the question will finally be answered…and the fate of Gotham will be decided.

Why it’s a Pick: This tale has been very well told- when they introduced Gotham and Gotham Girl my initial reaction was ‘ughhhh’ but this has won me over. And seeing how Batman plans to take down Gotham before he destroys the city should be good, and add to that the run in for the ‘Monster Men’ with Hugo Strange and Psycho Pirate and this should be an amazing issue.

Book of the Week

Black Hammer steals it for me after that brilliant first issue- this will be top of my too read pile come tomorrow afternoon.
