Weekly Recommendation: Zombie Fluxx


This weeks recommendation comes in the form of a table top card game from ‘Looney Labs’ and is called Zombie Fluxx- this game is an ever changing game of survival featuring zombies in the apocalypse. But it really is much more than that, as the goal to win can change on a dime so can your desire to kill the zombies when you discover you may need several to even win at all. If you want a game for 2or more players that is insanely fast paced and entertaining this may be the one for you.


As a bit of a nerd, I really enjoy a good card game that can be picked up and played easily in a short time but can take a few players to truly master; and this game certainly does that as it begins with a slow pace for the first few minutes but as soon as you grasp the basic rules this game becomes a huge amount of fun and moves at a real pace.

The rules are pretty simple (at least at the start) because it all begins with one basic rule: Draw one card, Play one card. You start with a hand of three cards… add the card you drew to your hand, and then choose one card to play, following the directions written on your chosen card. As cards are drawn and played from the deck, the rules of the game change from how many cards are drawn, played or even how many cards you can hold at the end of your turn.


The premise on the whole is simple, you want to gather as many resources as you can (Called Keepers) as these are the items that you need to win- yet at the same time you need to try and steal these from your fellow players and avoid the Creepers (Zombies). Should you get a Creeper, most of the goals prevent you from winning with these even if you have the required resources to survive the Zombie apocalypse- however with the right Keeper card you can kill the zombies and remove them from your hand; but you need to do this quickly before the goal changes and you need that Keeper you just expended to remove the un-dead. This element makes the game really strategic as you not only need to try and collect the Keepers, but you need to seriously think about whether you expend one(it returns to the pack, so can be redrawn) to rid yourself of zombies, and not all of the Creepers can be killed some can only be moved to other players. This element of moving Creepers is fun, as you can prevent others from winning right at the last moment, but be careful not to change the goal to instantly give another player the win.

This game is hugely fun to play- and watching someone go from looking like their on the verge of winning to sudden broken as the goal changes can be fun; especially if its the rule of ‘Play All’ that forces the change and they placed this rule in play last turn. But whatever you do don’t play the ‘UnGoal’ which forces a Zombie win, and you all get eaten.

As much as I thought an ever changing rule game be be difficult to keep track off and weird to play but this game is loads of fun whether its with two players of a group of friends. You owe it to yourself to try this one out.
