Comic Book Picks 7th October’15

Wednesday is nearly here again.and that means its time to get your geek on and pick up some great comic books. This week is a big one too, as we see the launch of the All New All Different Marvel universe- despite Secret Wars still being only half way through. So what’s worth buying this week? Here are my picks

The Goon: Once Upon a Hard Time (4of4)

Official Synopsis: This climactic issue wraps up the story that started sixteen years ago with the very first issue of The Goon. The Goon has hard choices to make. Some live. Some die. And everything changes. Don’t miss this major turning point in the Goon mythology.

Why its a Pick: This issue promises to deliver huge change and Eric Powell never fails to deliver on a promise, and the fact that the Goon could very well be ending here is a real hook. This story has been of a very different tone to normal Goon tales but the dark and emotional tone has worked, and I’m genuinely worried for the fate of Goon here. I expect this to be a big issue, that will look as beautiful as ever and really deliver on story.

Amazing Spider-Man #1

Official Synopsis: Spider-Man has gone global! Parker Industries is more successful than ever, with offices in New York, Shanghai, London and San Francisco and Peter Parker is racking up the frequent flyer miles with his “bodyguard” Spider-Man in tow, of course. But success breeds enemies and a reinvigorated Zodiac have also widened their scope to threaten the whole world. Join Dan Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli as they take Spider-Man to the next level! This huge first issue also includes stories featuring Silk, Spidey 2099, Spider-Woman and much more!

Why its a Pick: Well let’s be honest its Spider-Man and he has a new status-qou post Secret Wars that I’m excited to check out. This series reminds a little of Batman Incorporated at this point with Spider-Man spanning the globe but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.Dan Slott has been great taking on the web crawler over the last 5years and I see no reason to think is going to change here and now.

Doctor Strange #1

Official Synopsis: Who do you call when things are coming out of your dreams and trying to kill you? Or when your daughter is cursing in Latin and walking like a spider? Or when your dog keeps screaming at you to strangle your neighbours? Doctor Strange, of course. He’s the only person standing between us and the forces of darkness, but has he been paying his tab? Every act of magic has a cost and Jason Aaron (THOR, ORIGINAL SIN) and Chris Bachalo (UNCANNY X-MEN) are going to put Stephen Strange through hell to even the scales.

Why its a Pick: Doctor Strange has been a long-time favourite of mine who i feel is under appreciated and under used on the whole, so this fresh opportunity to see him given a solo book written by Aaron has me filled with hope. I’m also expecting the book to get a lot of chances to do things differently and more dark than normal as we head towards the MCU début of Strange, as any good publicity can surely only help. However what has me most excited is the premise that all magic has consequences- something we’ve rarely seen before so this could be used to great story effect and I trust Aaron to truly bring the story and characterisation here just as he did with Thor.

Other books of note (I had a hard time this week)

  • Secret Wars 6 of 9
  • Star Wars 10
  • Darth Vader 10
  • All New All Different Marvel 1
  • Avengers 0
  • Groot 5
  • Heroes Vengeance 1
  • Invincible Iron Man 1
  • Journey to Star Wars the Force Awakens 2
  • Powers 5

Book of the Week

Despite a Marvel heavy week- the Goon wins here as I’m far more interested in this end than any of the new beginnings right now.
