Wednesday is nearly here and that means its time for new comic books to hit the shelves and with this week being a huge release week it’s even more important to buy the right books. Here are my choices for this week.
Journey to Star Wars :The Force Awakens- Shattered Empire #1 (of4)
Official Synopsis: For the first time in the new Star Wars canon, journey with us into the time after the end of Return of the Jedi! Writer Greg Rucka (PUNISHER, WOLVERINE, Gotham Central) and artist Marco Checchetto (AVENGERS WORLD, PUNISHER) take us past the destruction of the second Death Star into the chaos of a Shattered Empire.
Why it’s a Pick: Star Wars fever has managed to grip me again, and the trailer reveal for episode 7 along with all the new information arriving has me majorly excited to get out and see this movie on December the 18th, and a comic book prequel to set-up the universe is exactly what we need. For this reason alone this is easily the most anticipated comic book to arrive from Marvel since they announced the Star Wars licence. This should be a good read and hopefully we get some information on Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren and Finn here.
Harrow County #5
Official Synopsis: After uncovering Harrow County’s twisted history and her own bizarre connection to the populace, Emmy forges a new and profound connection to the land and its creatures — but a familiar and sinister presence lurks just over the county lines…
Why its a Pick: Harrow County is possibly my favourite new series of 2015, its a great mix of horror and story that has a compelling lead character and offers lots of promise for future storylines. Add to that a skinless guardian, and his talking skin in a bag, some crazy towns folk willing to kill a little girl and a host of ‘haunts’ (ghosts) and this book has been a great read from the start. It’s never too late to start reading this, and I cant recommend it enough.
Official Synopsis: It’s the origin of new villain Mr. Bloom! In a tale from Bruce Wayne’s past, Batman must investigate a vicious crime in the shadowy area of Gotham City known as the Narrows. Don’t miss this special issue illustrated by superstar artist Jock (Wytches, GREEN ARROW YEAR ONE)!
Why its a Pick: Snyder has done amazing things with the Batman, he’s even manged to get me reading and excited for stories where Wayne is no longer the Bat- and I never thought that would happen. Mr Bloom is a weird as hell villain so far, but has been interesting to see develop and watch Gordon try to take down, and I don’t expect that to stop here. Add to the mix the amazing art style of Jock, who’s Batman run (The Black Mirror) was amazing should really add something to this tale too. This is potentially a great stand alone issue, and we don’t get many of those.
Book of the Week
Nothing else has me more excited this week, despite their being some great releases. Star Wars has well and truly sunk into my inner geek, and will dominate my nerdyness until at least Christmas im afraid. The promise of new material is too much to not be hugely excited about.
