Comic Book Picks 2nd September’15

Ok Wednesday is nearly here, and despite a quiet week for big release there are still some comic books worth making that visit to the comic book store for. So without any further delay here are my books of the week.

Deadpool Vs Thanos #1

Official Synopsis: We all know Thanos—the man who single-handedly made bejeweled gloves into THE deadly weapon of choice for mass murder. But did you know he shares an ex with Deadpool? No, not Vanessa—I refer to the cosmic “lady” known as DEATH. And when everyone in the universe stops dying, both of her former beaus take an interest. Can the pair overcome one’s overwhelming hatred of and annoyance by the other? Or will Thanos finally let Deadpool die once and for all?

Why its a Pick: Deadpool is fun in short bursts (no more than 6months as leading man), and Thanos is always a true pleasure to watch destroy things so the mix of the comedy and destruction and seeing these two go toe-toe should be super fun. I’m not expecting anything ground breaking from the book, but i am expecting it to be a great read full of action and some great fight sequences.

Groot #4

Official Synopsis: Groot assembles a ragtag band of aliens to go after Eris and finally save his long-last pal, Rocket! An EXPLOSIVE surprise sets his plans off-course, though!

Why its a Pick: This book has been really fun so far, even the last issue with the Silver Surfer delivered much more fun and laughs than I was expecting- and isn’t that the real reason we all read comics? Groot has been a really good lead character, which is surprising given his limited vocabulary but the book has been working so far and after only 3issues I see no reason for this to change.

Plutona #1

Official Synopsis: A brand new heartfelt super-hero series by JEFF LEMIRE (DESCENDER, Hawkeye) and amazing newcomer EMI LENOX! PLUTONA follows the story of five suburban kids who make a shocking discovery while exploring the woods one day after school…the body of Plutona, the world’s greatest superhero. A dark and heartbreaking journey about friendship and coming of age all through the lens of the superhero genre.

Why its a Pick: Lemire has delivered on his last few books, and I don’t expect this to stop here given the subject matter sounds right up his alley as he is once again working on grounded and real world people dealing with problems. This should be a good read that offers something different to the regular superhero book.

Book of the Week

Plutona Steals it this week, simply due to the writing talent on this book. Lemire should deliver a great tale and I’m excited to see how he sets the groundwork for this unique book.
