Comic Book Picks 21st Jan’15

Well were nearly at the middle of the week readers, and that means it’s so close to being new comic book day. This week has some big issues, but what do I think you should be reading? Well heres are my picks

Amazing Spider-Man #13

Why its a Pick: Simply put- Spider-Verse has been great! There hasn’t been a single moment of poor pacing, or convenient plot points or simply a moment that makes you go “Huh?” yet and for a long running and hugely important event that is rare. Slott has been nailing this event from the story telling point, and from the sheer scale of the event and the feeling that this could really end all of the ‘Spiders’ if the inheritors win- and that alone makes every issue a must read. And let’s be honest who doesn’t want to see a whole bunch of ‘spiders’ battling the inheritors and the showdown between Parker and Morlun one more time.

Powers #1

Official Synopsis: Just in time for the debut of the long-awaited POWERS TV show comes this brand-new number one, a perfect jumping-on point for fans new and old! The Eisner Award-winning POWERS tells the story of homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who are assigned cases specifically involving powers. If a superhero falls dead from the sky or a super villain is found dead in the gutter, it’s up to Walker and Pilgrim to solve the case. But having barely survived the most harrowing case of their careers and discovering government corruption of the highest level, Walker and Pilgrim are now faced with the most difficult decision they’ve ever had to make. Plus: the discovery of a power no one has ever seen before! This issue – double sized for the regular price – will also include an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the POWERS TV show with never-before-seen pictures from the set.

Why its a Pick: Powers has always been a great book, despite it having multiple relaunch’s and never quite finding its monthly release feet and as such not garnering the level of attention that this book deserves. Yes it has won the Eisner award, and with good reason but it should be a much bigger and more regular produced book. Hopefully this relaunch- alongside the TV show- will be just what this book needs to truly take off more and become a true goliath in the industry.

Batman and Robin #38

Official Synopsis: The team of Batman and Robin are together again! But what is the new dynamic for this crime fighting duo now that Damian has super powers of his own?

Why its a Pick: The return of Damian Wayne is a big deal, regardless of whether I agree with it or not (I don’t) but either way this is a big step for DC. However DC’s inability to hide both his death and return from readers is shocking, that doesn’t mean that the story told here can’t be good. I’m excited to see how Damian has gained ‘powers’ or even if he truly has, this book has me more excited to see what happens than I was when the killed Damian and that has to be a good thing.

Book of the Week:

This is purely for the hope that this book truly explodes here- and I Know Bendis will give us another great tale. This book has always been a great read- and if youve never read it before now is the time to get on board.
