Welcome to the first comic book picks of the new year (I missed last weeks) and im actually excited to be blogging my first new year picks in a week that features some nice titles, and gives me some real choice to pick from- and not just from the two big companies either. So without further ado here are my piucks for the week.
Ant Man #1
Official Synopsis: Scott Lang has never exactly been the world’s best super hero. Heck, most people don’t even think he’s been the best ANT-MAN — and the last guy invented Ultron and joined the Masters of Evil, so that’s saying something. But when the SUPERIOR IRON MAN calls with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Scott’s going to get a chance to turn it all around and be the hero he’s always dreamed of being. Sure he’s been to prison! Sure he’s been through a messy divorce! Sure he’s been, um… dead. But this time is different! This time nothing is gonna stop the astonishing ANT-MAN
Why its a Pick: Nick Spencer delivered with ‘Foes of Spiderman’ in terms of story and comedy gold wrapped into some very solid action and character development, so im excited to see what he can do with Antman- especially given that this is clearly going to have a huge focus on it with the film coming out later this year. Early reviews are suggesting this is a great first issue, and it seems like it could be a restart that the character needs to be relevant again in the Marvel universe. For that reason alone im excited to see what they allow Spencer to do with this title.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D #2
Official Synopsis: In Brazil, Hellboy and a small group of BPRD agents investigate gruesome and bizarre murders happening in the shadows of a sixteenth-century Portuguese fortress, but what they uncover is more terrifying than they imagined.
Why its a Pick: Simply its Hellboy!! And Mignola back in a monthly writing capacity- that should be enough so go and buy this book now! However in all seriousness the first issue was a really nice read, it helped give us some new and exciting dynamics within the BPRD and some new characters alongside giving us a look at Hellboys first ever mission in the field looking a lot more like a rookie than were used to seeing now. Seeing Hellboy unburdoned and inexperienced was intersting given everything we now know about him, and im looking forward to more of that in the coming story arc. Also Maleev is still one of the better pencilers within the industry (in my opinion) and seeing him work on a top title again is really nice, this series has promise and im looking forward to it going forward.
Wolf Moon #2
Official Synopsis: How do you hunt a werewolf if a different person becomes the monster with every cycle of the moon? The Wolf continues to elude Dillon, and now the trail is going cold. Hoping to uncover some clues, Dillon turns to a reclusive expert on werewolf legends, and what he learns crushes any hope of ever destroying the creature.
Why its a Pick: The first issue was a very good read, it gave us some decent story and a huge amount of gore and violence to g along with it- but what impressed me the most was the twist to the regular werewolf tale at the end. This gives this book a whole new lease of life in a genre that is somewhat over done these days and also adds some real excitement to the prospect of hunting a werewolf it can change host every moon. Cullen Bunn always writes good books, so im expecting this to continue strong all the way to the end.
Book of the Week:
Without question this is the book of the week for me, with a close second on Antman. Had it not been written by Mignola Marvels tiniest hero may well of stolen the crown.
