Comic Book Picks 10th December’14

Wednesday is nearly here, as is the end of the year, and that means that it time for a new batch of comic books in 2014 that will hopefully keep one of the better years (at least recently) for ongoing series alive and provide us with another week of great books to get our hands on. Here are my picks for the week….

Amazing Spider-Man #11

AMZSP11

Official Synopsis: SPIDER-VERSE PART 3! AMAZING SPIDER-MAN VS. SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN! The Spider-Army doesn’t have time for this squabbling as the Inheritors tighten their noose.

Why its a Pick: Spider-Verse has been a well written and thoroughly entertaining story so far, and I see no reason that this should change under the helm of Dan Slott. This issue also promises us a confrontation between Parker and Octavius as their respective takes on a hero clash. This is a fight that should definitely be well worth every eye-popping and exhilarating moment and that’s before you even mention the closing in of the Inheritors, who have very quickly become a real threat to everyone in every universe. It’s nice to see a major event that has a real villainous threat from the beginning, and that you genuinely feel could win. This should be read for sure this week.

Bitch Planet #1

BITPLAN1

Official Synopsis: 2014 Best Writer Eisner Award nominee KELLY SUE DeCONNICK (PRETTY DEADLY, Captain Marvel) and VALENTINE DE LANDRO (X-Factor) team up for the very third time to bring you the premiere issue of BITCH PLANET, their highly-anticipated women-in-prison sci-fi exploitation riff. Think Margaret Atwood meets Inglourious Basterds.

Why its a Pick: Kelly Sue DeConnick has had a great year in comic books, both with mainstream success and independent success and I sense this may be continuing here, as her writing style is one that very much suits genre blending stories with a strong female cast- and Bitch Planet most definitely sounds like that. This book is sure to sell out in print this week, as it has a small print run and I expect demand to be high- so get in there now for what is sure to be a well written and off the wall entertaining story.

Thor #3

THORW3

Official Synopsis: Lifting the enchanted hammer Mjolnir has transformed a mysterious woman into an all-new version of the mighty Thor. But what happens when she’s separated from that hammer? Plus, Frost Giants! ROXXON! And oh yeah, whatever happened to the guy who used to carry that hammer?

Why its a Pick: So far Lady Thor has been an exciting read, we have no idea who the mysterious new wielder of Mjolnir is or why she was deemed worthy- and this mystery alone is enough to get you reading. But if that’s not it, then the action so far has also been of a really high standard- we’ve seen Thor (Odinson Thor) battle the king of the Dark Elves, and we’ve seen new Thor battle a whole crazy bunch of frost giants in some amazing fight scenes and I don’t think this will be stopping anytime soon.

Book of the Week:

AMZSP11

Spider-Vere Wins!!! This series has been so damn good that there is no way I could possibly consider giving the title of must read book to anything else right now!The whole Spider-Verse is in peril, and may well fall unless Parker and his brethren can save the day- but how can they do this while fighting the ego of Octavious?! I guess this week we get to find out!
