Rumor: Disney Potentially Reissuing Unaltered STAR WARS Films

Comicbook.com has reported that Disney/Lucasfilm has begun plans to reissue the unaltered original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-Ray to coincide with Episode VII‘s theatrical release on December 18, 2015. The website quotes unnamed but “independent reliable” sources as saying that this has been in the works for some time, but has been waylaid “because of some damage to the original negatives they are utilizing.”

However, The AV Club notes that Disney does not own the distribution rights to the original trilogy, which still lie with Fox, as well as all distribution rights to the prequel trilogy. A detailed breakdown of who owns what exactly can be found at The Hollywood Reporter. (That 2012 article notes that Fox has the distribution rights to the original Star Wars “in perpetuity.”)

If true, this would not be the first time the unaltered trilogy was released. Fox released the original trilogy on VHS…
