Comic Book Picks 9th July’14

Were quickly approaching that time of the week where the comic books hit the shelves and eager readers like myself, cant wait to get our new hands on them. But whats out there this week that’s got me excited? Well let me tell you what im planning on buying and why this week.

Grayson #1

Official Synopsis: Dick Grayson. Former sidekick. Former Super Hero. Former dead man. And now…agent of Spyral?!
A thrilling new chapter of Dick Grayson’s life begins in this new, ongoing series. It’s a super-spy thriller that will shock you and prove one thing: You might think you know Nightwing – but you don’t know Dick.

Why I’m Excited: Nightwing, or in particular Dick Grayson has always been my favourite of all the sidekicks to the Dark Knight even beating out the ever popular Damien Wayne. However unfortunately for Grayson he has always lived in the shadow of the ‘Bat’ even in his short tenure under the mantel himself, until the recent events of Forever Evil where he really stepped up and showed the ability he has to be a real superhero that can make a difference. This opportunity at a new start, and with a fresh non-costumed approach this could be just what he needs to become one of DC’s bigger stars. With this title being written by Tim Seeley you can guarantee that the book will hold true to its ‘spy-based’ stories and deliver on the character development.

New Suicide Squad #1

Official Synopsis: The world has changed for Task Force X, a.k.a. the Suicide Squad. Director Amanda Waller no longer has the autonomy she once had. New members disrupt the team dynamic. And the team takes on an international scope. New members Joker’s Daughter, Deathstroke and Black Manta join Harley Quinn and Deadshot for a mission in the most dangerous and unpredictable place in the world: Vladimir Putin’s Russia!

Why I’m Excited: Suicide squad has always been a great idea, and hs always delivered some very good stories of Villains attempting to make the most of their opportunities and try to do some good. Yet the team has always felt like it needs a little bit of work, as a lot of the characters have been similar in their motivations and reasoning- yet this new team adds a whole new dynamic to the Suicide Squad as everyone in the team is thoroughly unpredictable and capable of real horrid violence at a moments notice and this gives the book that anything could happen feel that it always felt like it lacked slightly.

Spider-Man 2099 #1

Official Synopsis: The book you have been demanding for months finally hits the stands! Miguel O’Hara is Spider-Man in the year 2099 but he’s currently stuck in the year 2014. He was stranded here by his father who is the head of an evil corporation called Alchemax in 2099. But in 2014, Alechmax has just been formed and Miguel has a chance to stop its corruption before it starts! You’d think being a man out of time would make you a man without enemies, but Spider-Man 2099 is about to discover that he’s not the only one hoping for a better tomorrow, one that might be ensured by The Adjustor eliminating Miguel from the time stream altogether! Join comics legend (and Spider-Man 2099 creator) Peter David and breakthrough artist Will Sliney (Superior Spider-Man Team-up) for the most adventure you’ll find in a book this side of the twenty second century!

Why Im Excited: Spider-Man is a favourite of mine, add to that an ongoing series that focuses on the alternative version from 2099 and I’m sold.  The 2099 Spider-Man has been a favourite of mine since I brought my first 2099 comic at the age of 10 on a holiday to the USA from a convenience store, and the recent incarnation from Dan Slott has been nothing short of great. So a series that focuses on Miguel O’Hara in the current timeline should be exciting and offer a real new take on this version of the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ that should provide some great stories and some amazing action. Then theirs the writing talent of Peter David to look at, the man who created Spider-Man 2099 coming home to tell new tales and this is just such an exciting opportunity i cant possibly pass it up.

Pick of the Week:

I’m super excited for this book, and im afraid nothing else this week can distract me from making this the first thing i pick up and the first thing I read come the end of the work day on Wednesday.
