Today heralds the release of this weeks new films, but for the first week in a short while there isnt a huge amount making an appearance on the big screen- which makes picking a film of the week fairly easy. However there are still several movies out this week that I run through and give you my thoughts on, so let’s get started.
This is the first film of the week, and has garnered some huge attention after its premier at this years festivals and has had some very good reviews. This is the second film to be directed by Lenny Abrahamson, so im not fully sure what to expect from a shot by shot basis but the film does look to have a very independent and character focuses feel to the direction based on the clips and trailers ive seen- which is usually a good sign for a movie of this kind.
The movie stars Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson, Scoot McNairy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Matthew Page and Hayley Derryberry, so does boost an impressive list of stars that should help to add some really good acting performances to this movie and potentially pull it away from being strange and into being a really good, yet massively different movie.
The official synopsis for this movie is as follows: Jon, a young wanna-be musician, discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew when he joins an eccentric pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank.
This is the movie I would recommend that you go and see this week, despite the next movie having a much bigger media presence and lead actor- yet i feel this movie will leave you much more satisfied and will do much better things with its cast and story. I see this being a funny yet heart warming tale that you wont easily forget.
This is easily the most star filled and biggest advertised movie of the week- and alot of that has to do with it starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. You know a film is getting majorly advertised when they get their own spot on the WWE’s Monday Night Raw and that was the case here, along with what appears to be countless advertisement time on UK television over the last two weeks.
The movie is directed by David Ayer who has previously delivered two well shot action movies in the form of ‘Law Abiding Citizen’ and ‘Ends Watch’ so i do expect this to be more watchable than some of the action movies that make their way onto screen, as you’ll atleast be able to tell whats happening when the action pace quickens and the bullets begin to fly.
The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Joe Manganiello, Harold Perrineau, Mireille Enos, Josh Holloway, Olivia Williams, Terrence Howard andSam Worthington which means that it does host a collection of well known action faces. I fully expect Arnold to deliver a quality performance with what he’s given here- as he appears to have really tailed back the massive action hero role to a role that is much suited to a man of his experience and age. Im not sure what to expect from Mangiello, who will be having to hold alot of the action scenes, as from what ive seen of him he’s not superb- but im hoping to be surprised here.
That’s it for this week- and as I’ve already said Frank is the film is to see. So if you check it out let me know what you think.
